In the back of our magazines, there are pages called "resources" where spreads of different stories and where to find out items detailed in that story. Right now, I am having to export all those stories as a spread PDF. Which also means I need to do that every time there is a change. Is there a way to place InDesign files as spreads into another InDesign document? I saw a similar question was asked about eight years ago, but nothing really useful was said.
No, you can only place pages of InDesign documents.
But take care, if you place PDFs that those are PDF/X-4 regardles of the requirements for the printer of the final output.

If you export the PDF and just overwrite the old file you can simply update the link in the InDesign layout.

Why not place the two pages of the spread and group them? Seems like that would take less time than the PDF export and place and it probably could be scripted.
