What does this mean? [Unable to open files in Photoshop CS - unexpected end of file encountered]

I am running Photoshop 8.0 on an older Mac. My last two attempts to open files I have previously worked on present me with: "Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered."
I have no clue what that means or how to remedy the situation. Can anyone out there answer this for me?

You've posted in the forum for Adobe Photoshop Sketch, which is a mobile app unrelated to your problem.

Please clarify what software you're using and we can move this post into the right place. You said "Photoshop 8.0" which could mean:

Adobe Photoshop CS, released in 2003, internally referenced as Photoshop 8.0.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, released in 2009.

Please clarify and we'll move this post.

Note: it may also help if you tell us your version of Mac OS.

What file types are they?

Do the files open in Preview or ImageReady?
