Different rows within one table to different layers

Hi there,

I have a table in InDesign that has a row with images in it then the next row has the title of the above image and this is repeated down the page.

I want to be able to have the images within the table on a different layer as pdf's are output from the document with and without images.

I really don't want to have to have separate tables for separate layers as there are a lot of different tables and documents and will just add to possible errors going forward when other people amend the documents.

Can you have different layers within one table?

Any magic solutions greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Jo

Hi Jo

I don't believe you can have different layers within a table.

A workaround for your problem might be using Object Styles.

If you apply an object style to your images and choose for them to be 'Non printing' in the 'Attributes panel' Found in the Window Menu under Output.

Then if you wish them to print you can change the frame to 'printing' and update your Object style.

It's as quick as switching on an off layers.

Hope this works for you.

Hi

Nope, you can't have "different layers within a table".

Your request could probably be handled in many different ways/workarounds.

Question is: do you really need a table or could you think of another way to design your doc, without table, meaning you'd be able to use separate layers.

Anyhow here's a workaround, keeping the table structure:

- create an object style and apply it to your image frames (using find/replace Object may be useful and fast)

- In the object style, go "Text Wrap & others" and check "Non printing".

- The result is that you can see the images in Normal mode, but they won't export.

- Uncheck "Non-printing" option to reverse the process and export the document with images.

Hi Jo,

you can have different layers with different text frames that belong to one story flowing one single table.

If flowing the table through different text frames on different layers is doable at all depends on the header row(s) and the header row settings. No magic solution here…

Uwe

Hi,

would Object>Lock enough to protect the content (images) from interferences?

Hi Eric,

hm… I think that would not help.

I would do it with two duplicates of the original document.

Dup A would show all images of document as none-printing.

Dup B would have all the images set to printing and all texts would be filled with "None".

Uwe
