I have downloaded acrobat dc 7 day trial software.  When I try to edit a scanned PDF, none of the texts or images has a highlighted box around them after I click on the edit button.  How do I get the software to edit the scanned PDF?

You don't. Acrobat is not an image editor.

You can try running Text Recognition on the file and convert the scanned text into "real" text, which you can later edit, or you can open the image using a different application (like Photoshop) and edit it there, which will then automatically update the PDF.
