New to PS and I have an image (png) that I can import into photoshop but I want to also import a psd layer from another image into the same window and then layer it over the original png image. I cannot figure out how this is done.

Several options

• File > Place …

• open both images and drag the Layer from the Layers Panel into the other image’s window

• open both image and use Layer > Duplicate Layer

• open both images, Select > Select All, Edit > Copy and the paste in the other image

Thanks but not understanding, if I open an image in ps and then try to open another image the first image is replaced by the one last opened. I need to have both images in one window.

c.pfaffenbichler already covered this...

In order for his suggestions to work you need to essentially copy or place the file in the already open document like so:

2017-04-06_12-07-20.png

Typically I will embed rather than link the placed file as I often need to work on the image in different ways.

Linking means that the placed file will update or show an error every time you make changes to that "original" version of the placed document.

Both images can be open simultaneously, maybe you should turn off tabs.

Even with tabs enable you can select the other image via Window > …

c.p.'s answer did explain a method to achieve that, but there other options.  For instance you could select two or more images in Bridge, and go Tools > Photoshop > Load Files into Photoshop Layers

Or after loading the first image in Photoshop, go File > Place Embedded

In addition you could also try some of c.pfaffenbichler other suggestions such as:

open both images and drag the Layer from the Layers Panel into the other image’s window

You must have the layer you want to copy unlocked and be using the move tool (keyboard shortcut V) like so:

2017-04-06_12-16-39.gif
