InDesign CS4 - Paste greyed out?

InDesign has suddenly stopped allowing me to "Paste". All commands that have Paste in them are greyed out. My research says to ALT-CTRL-SHIFT on relaunching InDesign and then deleting the InDesign Defaults when prompted. When i do that I am unable to even launch InDesign and am prompted to restore  the file from recycle. Any pearls of wisdom out there?

If trashing prefs doesn’t work, you may have to uninstall, run the CC Cleaner Tool, and then reinstall.

Is the only way to trash prefs by using the Alt-Ctrl-Shift?

And is InDesign Defaults folder the prefs?
