I recently imported some jpeg files to Photoshop CC and applied the default "shadows and highlights" adjustment. Upon saving they were given an shh file extension which none of my OS X  files will open including Photoshop CC. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you used the Save button in the Shadows/Highlights dialog, which just saves a preset and not the actual image.

The presets for the Shadows/Hightlights filter have an .shh extention.

Anytime you want to save an image, use File>Save As.
