Blank boxes substituted for characters

When submitting jobs to the printer from InDesign some characters, like numbers, are getting replaced with empty boxes.  This does not happen on every document or even in the same place on every document. I exported the file to a .pdf file but the print does not look as crisp as it does when printed out from InDesign. I have also attempted to disable to option to download fonts and when doing so it did eliminate the boxes but did not give me the correct font style. Any suggestion on what could be causing the issues with blank boxes substituted for characters.

I think that the font does not include those glyphs and you are working with false styles.
