Problem with "Merge to HDR Pro"

I have recently updated to latest Photoshop 2017.1.1, Bridge 7.0.0.93 x64, Camera Raw 9.10.0.739, Lightroom 2015.10.  Adobe Creative Cloud says all Apps are current.

When I try to merge .nef images from Bridge with the command Merge to HDR Pro then use command " Complete Toning in Adobe Camera Raw" and click on "tone in ACR" Photoshop opens. After Photoshop loads the files the error message (The command "Camera Raw Filter" is not currently available) appears. If I then click on Filters "Camera Raw Filter" is grayed out.

I have a similar problem when I try to merge from Lightroom.  I get the error message "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 9.10 for full compatibility .  Please update the Camera Raw plug-in using the update tool available in the Photoshop help menu."  I am given the option to "open Anyway" or "cancel".  If I "Open Anyway" Photoshop opens and the same error message appears.

I am using Windows 10 pro.

You are not the first person to notice this, and the answer is not going to make your day because this is a deliberate.  This is the Help page that tries to explain the change, and gives some workarounds.

Command 'Camera Raw filter' not available in Merge to HDR Pro

And here is a discussion on the Feedback site on the same subject.

I have not tried the workarounds yet, but I have just dug out an old bracketed set, and will give them a go.  For me, the ability to edit the 32 bit file in ACR was a huge deal and a complete game changer.  I never used Photomatix again from that point on.  It was not all sweetness and light though.  For a start, once you had a few local adjustments going on the 32 bit file in ACR my reasonably powerful system was showing noticeable lag, but the biggest problem was down sampling from 32 bit to a more usable 16 or 8 bit file.  It just didn't look the same, and I had to make significant edits to restore contrast and saturation.  It was doable though, and I stuck with my new workflow.  Now, after all this time, Adobe have decided that the compromise was unacceptable and switched it off.

I tried to find the last thread about this because it would be useful to find out how that poster got on with the suggested workarounds  I think davescm was involved, so we'll see if he can find that thread.  If you can look at and try the workarounds, I'll do the same here, and we'll see if we can arrive at a workable workflow.  Otherwise I'll be heading back to Photomatix.  I've head it is a different animal to the one I left three years ago.

Hi Trevor

There was no further feedback from the other poster on those workarounds

ACR no longer available for 32bit files?

cajunautodealer - Ignore the error message about the ACR version. It is a bug and Open Anyway will open the files and does not affect the working at all (you can check the box so you will not see the message again)

I just updated LR, Photoshop, Bridge and Camera raw.  Opened three files to merge to HDR pro in PS and ignored the must update Camera raw.  Then in HDR pro I tried both checking and not checking the "tone in camera raw" box.  The HDR file was created but can not access the Camera raw filter!

I don't see how ignoring the message to update camera raw works at all.

Hi John

You missed the point in my answer

The error message is a bug, acknowledged by Adobe, and can be ignored - it does not impact the way ACR / Lightroom work at all.

The fact that Camera Raw does not now work with 32 bit is not a bug. It was a deliberate decision by Adobe and is explained in the attached

Command 'Camera Raw filter' not available in Merge to HDR Pro

Further to what Dave has said, if you use the workflow from the workarounds in the Adobe help page, then it all works nicely.

Select and load all the RAW files from the bracketed set in ACR

Select them all, right click and choose Merge to HDR.

This gives you the 32 bit data to work with in ACR, but you can only open this into Photoshop as 16 or 8 bit.  Actually I didn't try opening as a Smart Object (Hold down the Shift key while clicking on Open — from memory) so that might take you back into ACR with the 32 bit file.  You _have_ to save the 32 bit file to DNG before merging to HDR, so it might use this as a master.  In fact it probably does now I think about it.

Well that was a wast of a semi-rant, because the new workflow is noticeably better.  In fact I'd go so far as to say significantly better.

The only method that works for me as a non Lightroom user, is to open the bracketed set in ACR, select all and right click and choose Merge to ACR.  After trying both ways I found I was very happy leaving Auto-Tone checked.  After clicking on Merge the 32 bit file opens in ACR and you can add your local adjustments.  I can't say for sure, but I have a feeling I was getting less lag after adding a few local adjustments.

Whoops!  That last sentence had me go back and check, and the file came out of ACR in 8 bit, so some more work to do there.  But the proof of the pudding, as they say...   You'll need to click to expand, but the left is what I just got out of ACR and the right a finished composite from a few years ago (I don't do much HDR nowadays)  You can't go by the Saks windows as they are composited, but the overall image displays a very decent rendition of an extreme dynamic range from the bracketed shots.  But check the next screen shots to see what made me think the new process is significantly better.

The new merge to HDR is on the left, and the previous on the right.  If memory serves, I will have used local adjust brush to get the old one under control, but just look at how much more detail I have on the left.  That is bloody amazing IMO, so excuse me Adobe for ever doubting you.

I'll post this, but I am going to go back and start from the beginning again because I think there is more to be had from this. 🙂
