Whether I use File>import photos or drag a jpg from Mac finder into the library module, it acts as if there is no photo in the import dialog. Works fine on CR2s. Nothing else has changed. I optimized the catalog and restarted, with same result....

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Are you shooting Raw+ jpeg pairs? If so LR may regard the jpeg as a sidecar file for each pair. Try adjusting your pref settings.

From the menu go to:

Lightroom >> Preferences >> General (tab)

Put a checkmark in the box to treat jpegs as separate photos
