So here is my setup, I have a surface pro 4 and I use a micro sd to expand the memory 256gb in device and 256gb micro sd gives me a full 512gb of storage. My issue is this, I store my photos (200gb) in a folder on the microsd and when I go to import I cant select the add option as lightroom sees this drive as a memory card. Does anyone know a way around this? Any help would be hugely appreciated.

You need to assign a mount path folder to make your SD card appear as permanent storage.
Then hopefully Lightroom won't have a problem with it.

I believe that is how Lightroom is supposed to operate.

Makes perfect sense as normally you would not be using a memory card as a pseudo HD, its my set up which is unconventional hence the need for a work around.

How is the MicroSD formatted?
If you format it NTFS LR might see it as a hard drive instead of removable storage.

Hi, tried it this morning had high hopes but LR still recognises it as a memory card and wont let me "add", nice idea though.
