Intermittent graphics driver issues

Hi, when I try to use certain PS filters (e.g. oil paint) I get an error message about my graphics card being insufficient and recommending that I update my drivers. I'm running Mac, however, and am up-to-date with the latest Sierra. I'm also up-to-date with the latest PS CC.

Last night I had an Adobe employee remote into my computer and after some fiddling (e.g. increasing memory usage), the filters I needed started working. I came back to my Mac today, however, hoping to do some work, only to find they are again not working and I'm getting the same message, in spite of no settings having been changed since yesterday. The Adobe employee suggested it might be something wrong on Apple's end, but how do I get through to them without having to pay €30 for the privilege?

Does anyone know what might *actually* be wrong? It used to work in the past. Why would it be intermittent? And, having not worked fifteen minutes ago, I just tried it again and it does. WHAT.

Never heard of graphics interfering with the amount of memory Photoshop needs. (If I'm understanding you correctly.)

8 GB of computer memory (RAM) isn't exactly bad...but Photoshop sure loves its RAM more than anything.

What are the settings used for your documents? (8-bit or 16-bit? Dimensions?)

When the technician first remoted in, I had been working on a tiff that was 16 bit. They changed it to 8-bit and that made no difference. They then opened one of my raw files and tried it on that with no luck. When they did get it to work, it was with a raw 8-bit file. I usually work with raw or jpgs from a 7D, so not huge resolutions.

My partner remembered that his old MacBook Pro used to have an option for idling the graphics processing when it's not being used intensively, so he suggested something similar might be responsible for why this is an intermittent problem. But it both seems unlikely that an iMac would do that, and even if it does, we could find no option to "turn off" that feature anywhere, unlike on his MacBook.

Up to date doesn't necessarily mean that the driver is working as it should. The sad truth about video drivers is that new releases often mean one bug fixed, two new ones introduced. We've all had to roll back a version or three.

With Apple you're a bit crippled as you can't get current updates from the GPU vendor - you have to wait for a Mac OS update, and hope that fixes it.

The video card has its own dedicated memory - but if you're doing memory-intensive work and the GPU runs out, it starts eating into main memory. That's when 8GB starts to wear a little thin.

I had shut down (not just slept) my Mac last night, so when I used it this morning and opened Photoshop, it should have been "fresh". Opening Photoshop was the only intensive thing I'd done. So does it follow that my graphics card was so maxed out that it couldn't apply a filter?

Do you have any recommendations on how I can contact Apple and let them know? As far as I can tell I can only get support by paying for it.
