Migrating entire photo archive and catalog from laptop to desktop machine

I am having issues trying to move my photo archive that is all located on 1 folder on and external drive to a new desktop computer. My LR catalog is in the default location of Pictures on my laptop HD, but I have catalog info from LR 5 and LR CC residing in that folder and was unable to successfully move to new machine. Any assistance or direction to assistance would be greatly appreciated.
