How to stop PS from opening new doc as a TAB

There used to be a preference option, in the GENERAL settings, to NOT have new documents open as a TAB -- how can I do that now in PS CC? It's maddening as regards my

It's maddening as regards my workflow. This must be one of those things that's so simple to figure out -- BUT I CAN'T locate it.

Did CS4 even have a tabbed interface option at all? CS4 is so long ago (16 years!)  that nobody here remembers.

Yes in Photoshop CS4 go to Edit>Preferences>Interface and uncheck Open Documents as Tabs

On the Mac side it's Photoshop>Preferences>Interface and uncheck Open Documents as Tabs
