Photoshop CC OpenCL option greyed out - still not resolved

I am unable to use features in Photoshop CC 2017 that require OpenCL to be available.  The option to use this is greyed out.

I am advised by NVidia that my GU (GeForce GT705 (OEM)) is compatible with OpenCL 1.1.  I have the latest driver installed.

My query is - assuming my card is OK, why is this option unavailable to me in Photoshop?

Other users seem to have the same issue, but I have yet to see a reply that resolves this problem

Do you have 'use Nvidia' selected for Photoshop.exe and Sniffer.exe in the Nvidia Control Panel/ Manage 3D settings/Program Settings?

Reference and moore answers:

Why OpenCL is grayed out in supported and updated graphics card?

Thank you for your reply ... I do not see that option in the Nvidia Control Panel/ Manage 3D settings/Program Settings when I open Nvidia control panel.  I have Option1 - Select a program to customize, Option 2 - Specify the program settings.

Is this more helpful?

Step 1: Right click on your desktop, and select "NVIDIA Control Panel"

Step 2: Click "Manage 3D Settings."

Step 3: Click the "Program Settings" tab, using option 1 "Select a program to customize" and find the game.

Step 4: Under option 2 "Select the preferred graphics proccessor for this program:" you want to select "High-performance NVIDIA processor.

Step 5: Click apply, it may take 30 seconds or so for the settings to apply. I think 3D settings is the menu option.

Check this link for other screen shots. https://www.google.com/search?q=Nvidia+Option1+-+Select+a+program+to+customize&safe=off&source=lnms&...

Thanks again, but as mentioned previously, I do not see the same option 2 as your screen shot.  My option 2 is as option 3 in your example - see below:Capture.JPG

Look at the Global  settings tab and try this:

1)Right click on desktop and choose "NVIDIA Control Settings"

2)Look at left panel,under

3D Settings --> Manage 3D settings

now you have 2 tabs GLOBAL SETTINGS and PROGRAM SETTINGS.

Under GLOBAL SETTINGS tab under "Preferred graphics processor" choose "High Performance NVIDIA processor". Don't change any other details on that tab.

Now,under PROGRAM SETTINGS tab

click the button ADD which will ask you to browse the program you want.

Add sniffer.exe and Photoshop.exe (from C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2015).

choose the ".exe" file and click OK,the under "select the preferred graphics processor for this program" choose "High performance NVIDIA processor".

Click OK(if there is any) to save the changes and you're done.

Next time when you open Photoshop it will run by NVIDIA card.

I do not have that option ...under the Global Settings tab there are simply Features and Settings.  See my previous screen shot which is the same for both the Global tab and the Program Settings tab.  I cant find any way to update the Control Panel program, so assume I have the latest version.  In Photoshop, I do have the option to select a graphics processor (which I have done) but the OpenCL option remains greyed out.  In Device manager, I only see one entry (my Nvidia card) under Display Adapters.Capture02.JPG

Ok, so that idea assumed  two GPUs, the lower performance onboard and the high preformance Nvidia.

As a fellow user and forum volunteer I can only go so far.  Customer Care contact-bumper might be able to help you sort it out, and Nvidia might, but apparently the Sniffer is missing OpenCL.

OpenCL is for the Oil Paint filter and CC 2014 had the previous version that didn't need it. As a CC member you can install that as a workaround.

Follow the screenshots under Install Previous versions. You will be able to keep and use CC 2017.

Thanks again for all your help - much appreciated.  I'll follow the link you sent to see if this can be elevated.  This does appear to be a common problem amongst many users that is simply not being addressed.  Even a hint as to whether it is the card / driver supplier, Adobe - or me would be a start!

Unless I am mistaken, the only option available via the contact-bumper link above is to post (again) on a forum!  Seem to be going round in circles.

I have not been there in a while, but it seems they really are directing even CC customers to the Support forums.

I did fetch a document in regard to Graphics cards which may cover a lot of what I forgot.

Troubleshoot Photoshop graphics processor (GPU) and graphics driver issues

If no good, DM them on Twitter, Adobe Customer Care (@AdobeCare) | Twitter

If still no good, I'll see if I can get ahold of a Adobe Staff member.

This is from myPhotoshop "System info" option:

clgpu[0].CLPlatformVersion="1.2"

clgpu[0].CLDeviceVersion="1.1 CUDA"

I'm not sure what 'PlatformVersion" means, but if it is the minimum required (1.2) and my "DeviceVersion" is lower (1.1), then that might explain it?

The Adobe web site states that Photoshop requires a minimum of OpenCL 1.1 though ... so this might not follow.  Just a thought.

I notice you have some Nik plugins.

Try starting photoshop with the third party plug-ins disabled and see if OpenCL becomes available.

Hold down the Shift key and launch Photoshop. A dialog appears during launch that reads “Skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins?”

Hi Keith,

Have you tried different variants of the GPU driver available for that card?

Short of all that you and Gene have tried so far that would be my main suggestion.

If you've tried current GPU driver and perhaps a couple variants of older editions, there are still chances that some of the GL/OpenCL functionality will be unavailable in Photoshop, even if the card meets minimum requirements.

So I'd give different drivers a go and see how that goes. Otherwise it's possible the OCL support may not be there with this GPU.

Regards

PG

p.s. Thanks Gene for helping out!

Hi PG

Thanks for assisting (and of course to Gene for his ongoing help and persistence).

I have tried the previous version of the GPU Driver (no different re OpenCL capabilities) and will look to see if others are available.

I haven’t mentioned this previously, but I have a similar issue with Photoshop on a Dell Windows 10 laptop – this time with an AMD Radeon card + latest driver.  I have tried various driver versions with this GPU – all exhibiting the same symptoms.

I don’t understand your comment “there are still chances that some of the GL/OpenCL functionality will be unavailable in Photoshop, even if the card meets minimum requirements”.  The Adobe website clearly states that the cards I have are “tested”.  There is little point claiming this if they don’t actually work … so my assumption is that “tested” = “working”.

Hence, to claim they work, yet there is a chance some functionality is missing, seems rather misleading to me.

Regards

Keith

Update ... a new driver has been released (22 May) for my GPU, which I have installed.

OpenCL is still greyed out.

If I open an image and select Oil Paint (so far NOT greyed out), I still get the error (in Photoshop CC) that my driver needs updating.

If I convert the image to a Smart Object, I do NOT get the error, but none of the associated functionality works - eg changing any or all of the settings has no effect on the image.

Keith

Edit:  PS  Every time I launch Photoshop since updating the driver, I get Account Control asking if it is OK for Photoshop to make changes to my device ...

Hi Keith,

Regarding the Account Control: If you get properties on the Photoshop icon you're using to Launch Photoshop, and goto the Compatibility tab -- Do you have Run as Administrator checked? That'll cause the Account Control to ding at you every launch.

Hi Pete

Thanks again for your continued help, but … I had “Run as Administrator” set in Properties | Shortcut  | Advanced, but this option was unchecked in the Compatibility tab.  So, I set it – no change in behaviour.  I have also set it in the main options when you right click the Photoshop desktop icon, where it now adds a shield against the icon.  Still invokes Account Control, no matter how I try to open the program.

Regards

Keith

PS  I have since REMOVED "Run as Administrator" (to lose the yellow / blue shield it added to the icon) and Account Control is no longer invoked!  So, that problem has gone away.

Quick comment - today's Adobe updates have made no difference to this issue.

Those updates were Camera Raw and Lightroom. which does remind me.

Camera Raw has a Graphics Processor option. Sometimes it would leave black squares on images open in Photoshop even if Camera Raw was not being used. Unchecking that option fixed that problem. Could be ACR's graphics handling is taxing your GPU.

Might be worth a try, and I would recommend a restart of your PC to see if it helped.

Thanks for the suggestion – I tried it (with a restart) but no change in behaviour, I’m afraid.

Regards

Keith
