Save metadata to file options are greyed out!

When I edit pictures in develop mode, sometimes I do it in stages as time allows until complete.

I do two things:

a) Create a virtual copy on occasion as a back-up.

b) But much more often I right click on the edit in progress ( because I want to save my editing for latter) and when the metadata pop-up option box comes up I choose the "save metadata to file option" before moving on.

Now for some unexplained reason, that option and the others are grayed out.

How do I get back to what I really count on to safeguard work in progress?

Thanks for any help offered.

Perplexed as this is a brand new roadblock.

Make sure you're right-clicking the original (master) and not the virtual copy.   When you right-click a virtual copy, Metadata > Save Metadata To File will be greyed out.
