Thanks for the answers. The problem was with Radeon software (for AMD card).

I uninstalled it and now all is good.

Hi EdShamis,

You can try few ways to fix this issue.

1. Reset Lightroom preferences back to defaults

2. Turn off the GPU from the Lightroom preferences and check if that helps.

Open Lightroom > Edit menu > Preferences > Performance > Uncheck GPU > Restart Lightroom.

Thanks,

Mohit

Any idea how can I change the preferences if the app doesn't show up?

Ed, sorry I didn't see this as a hanging issue. https://www.lightroomqueen.com/articles-page/how-do-i-reset-lightrooms-preferences/   "In Lightroom CC/6, there’s a simple automated way of doing it—just hold down Alt and Shift (Windows) / Opt and Shift (Mac) while opening Lightroom and it’ll ask whether to reset the preferences. The timing is crucial—hold them down while clicking/double-clicking on the app/shortcut."

As I read the OP's question, I think the problem is that Lightroom stays in memory and will not re-open."stays in background processes"

If so, the the answer given at this post may be the answer-

lightroom remaining
