Attached are two images, the square one has been photoshopped by my friend. How did they achieve the extra space on each side and general look of continuity? A mask?

There are various ways but one of the fastest is :

Take your image :

Go to Image Canvas Size and extend the canvas so that it is square.

Make a selection round the right edge of plain backdrop

Use content aware scale to extend it to the edge and Filter Gaussian blur to blur any "stretch marks"

Repeat on the other side
