Can't find layer in the list of layers

I am completely new to photoshop.  I am trying to create a yearbook cover and I have an image on the document, but I want to move it, but it won't allow me to move it because it is not selected.  So I go to find the layer where it is supposed to be listed and its not there.  Please help!! So frustrated!!

With the move tool selected you can either :

Right click with your cursor in the image and you will get a list of layers under that point

or

Tick Auto Select in the options bar for the move tool and select just by clicking in the image

That didn't work and I don't know where the options bar is.  Also I closed on accident all my layers in the list on the bottom right corner and I don't know how to get it back to how it was before
