InDesign will DELETE Your files! - warning!

Ladies and gents,

I'm writing this story to make You aware of the fact that latest update of Adobe apps made them buggy and can delete Your files. Moreover Adobe Support will do NOTHING about it.

Two hours ago I was finishing the file that has a deadline on this sunday. The file is more than important since it's a documentation of our startup and it's been prepared for investors that are waiting just for this particular part of the whole investment project. The company we're creating is not a "new fancy track your running app", it's the system for a clients of the size of American Airlines, Nike, Walmart etc. which has been tested and which we've been working on for the last couple of months.

Knowing how important this work is and encountering several issues with Adobe apps in the past, I make four copies of the file in different locations - local disk, CC folder, company's NAS and portable encrypted WD disk. The last copy I made was yesterday. Since then I worked on the original file from 11:00 to 18:28 today. Made several important changes, created few new pages that are crucial to the whole document. At 18:28 I decided it's about time to save a copy since I'm in the middle of my (16h) workday. Of course I was clicking Ctrl+S the whole day so it saved to the original file.

When I clicked File - Save as copy... the InDesign suddenly crashed giving me the prompt about sending the info to Apple and starting to open again. Of course I send the log to Apple but when the InDesign opened, it showed me another prompt, to be exact this one:

which as You can see is asking "Do You want to recover document later or... later?"... NO, I WANT TO RECOVER IT NOW for God's sake!

So I clicked Yes and... nothing happened. So I tried to click on the file visible in the main window and... got another prompt:

Screen-Shot-2017-05-05-at-20.18.04.png

(this is the exact moment of opening the InDesign after the crash)

When I looked at the info I told myself that this is not possible and the file lays there somewhere. The first thing which really bothered me was the date of the file showed in the window. Trust me, I saved it 10mins before (May 5, 18:18).

So I ran to my location path. What I saw was almost giving me a heart attack (literally) - THERE WAS NO FILE. The only file I saw is this one:

So I Googled "how to recover InDesign" file as fast as possible and found out the location where all my recovery files should exist, which is

  • Mac OS X: Users/[User Name]/Library/Cache/Adobe InDesign/Version[#.0]/InDesign Recovery

The only files I found there are:

ProtectiveShutdownLog from 18:28 and RecoveryData from 18:38. No other meaningful file.

I made a thread on this forum writing like crazy to ask you guys for help. You told me that this is not Support forum, it's the user forum. I answered that I don't want to contact the Support since I had that experience in the past and it's indian people who don't understand a word and want You to restart Your computer etc. etc. (no offence, I'm far from being racist, it's a fact - indian support call centers are not far from being helpful) but I gave it a try.

And the nightmare began. First, I was transfered from one tech guy to another. That's understandable. Next, I was being asked about all the same things the last one asked me - moreover, the new tech guy told me he's aware of the problem and all the additional info, like my comp spec etc. So I thought he wanted to confirm that info. Then he had to have about 10 mins to read the thread and do his things. After that he asked me to log into my computer and share the screen, which I agreed to since I was desperate.

After being connected, my lovely indian friend did actually nothing beside stating that the file is not there. Which was being known from the f#$#@ beginning. So I asked him about other things, like the files I posted above. The answers were, what can I say, not satisfying. Chat transcript attached:

Yash Mathur has stopped viewing the customer's screen.

At the moment I know nothing. I'm left without any help and the feeling that somethings not right in here. Did Mathur copy my files? I have no idea. Did they do anything about it? No. Did they even tried to check the log I gave them, which InDesign created the moment it crashed? No.

How can I pay for another year of these apps if they can crash every moment they want? How can I be sure it won't happen again? How can I work if I must save two or three or four copies every time I make a change to the file?

The funny thing is I reported what Photoshop app did three days ago, after their last update. Not answered to this day.

This is ridiculous. What's even more hurting is that we can do NOTHING about it since Adobe is a monopoly. I just wanted to warn You before You get into my situation. Just save Your work 'cause it's no longer safe.

P.S. Recovering my work from head right now is almost impossible since it's creative process of writing.

Hi,

I am sorry that you had to face such a "nightmarish" experience.

Right now i can tell you two things, which may or may not help you.

1. Yash Mathur would not have copied the files or done anything to be worried about.

2. Just for the sake of it you can try reading this help page Recover documents and undo mistakes in InDesign

Saying so, I totally understand that this is not a solution to your problem. I am sure people on this forum page may have some better answers or hacks to recover.

I didn't want to offend the Yash Mathur of course but please understand that Adobe should have any kind of log available if one let Your company access his files. People are people, You never know. For the sake of assuring Your clients everything's ok the logs should be available.

BobLevine thank You for trying to help. Unfortunately I'm running El Capitan since I've heard many problems with Sierra.

@Aman

there's only one step - restart Your computer and hope it will recover the file. As the above screenshots and conversation with tech support states, there's not enough recovery files to physically get back my file (although it's still quite strange for me that tech support didn't check the logs and knew really basic info about the files that's left).

Moreover, when I restarted the iMac this morning and opened InDesign, it showed me this message:

which could have meant there's a lost file laying there somewhere (since "it has been changed"). It's not important right now, I spent the whole night trying to rebuild it from scratch.

What is important is Your support quality - You guys (and I'm really sorry to say that 'cause I always loved Your apps and was fighting like tiger for them everytime someone tried to say it's rubbish) are useless. The only thing support does is sending You links to Adobe's help sites, like we - the designers who probably spend more of their lives in front of the computers - didn't know how to Google or use the search engine. I need a REAL SUPPORT, a damn programmer who will take my logs, check your app and give me a proper answer why Your app crashed and how to avoid it in the future.

I know that some design posters, flyers etc. (which is still very important if it's the work that they make a living of) but some of us create work that people depend on. Like, if I won't make the deadline then at least dozen of families won't have a proper meal 'cause they won't get their salaries. Do You understand that?

Just get your shit together Adobe 'cause it's just ridiculous.

Ok, now I'm pissed. The problem HAPPENED AGAIN!

1. Recreated the file from my head overnight (so You can only imagine how tired I am right now)

2. Saved it to my disk and 4 other places

3. Saved a copy of it in different locations like hundred times today

4. Suddenly, out of nowhere, when I wanted to save the copy one more time (because right now I know I should do it every time the smallest change to the document is made since Your apps aren't reliable) - poof! - got the prompt from yesterday. Time of the prompt - 12:41

Having the experience from yesterday, FORTUNATELY the InDesign didn't close and I COULD save the file with different name, so I put "2" in the string and saved it in tens of locations.

I decided it's about time to make You work on this "issue" so I started recording a video. While doing it I found out there's NO SINGLE COPY of the file in all of the locations and the only copies that exists are the ones where I put "_" (underscore) between the original filename and "copy". Moreover, all of the copies have time of "last modified" set to yesterday...

Adobe. Just do Your damn job. It's not funny anymore. I'm literally thinking about suing your company.

I know you're frustrated but this is not a common problem at all. You're the only one reporting losing files on a day to day basis.

There is obviously something seriously wrong but I would I start looking at other parts of that system for issues.

Bob, the thing is I'm not frustrated. Now I'm coldhearted and just calculate possible solutions. One obvious is suing Adobe since it's the app problem that started to occur after the last overnight update. Also, I was reporting the similar problem with Photoshop but they did nothing about it, saying it's my problem, not theirs.

Guess what - if Elon Musk produced self driving cars and one in a thousand will crash it's still his and Tesla's problem, not the users, and Elon would actually take the car to investigate it, pay millions of dollars to the family whose member had the crash and report every minute to the press what was the reason the car crashed. Adobe on the other hand - as I understand You're their representative - is saying its MY problem. No it's not Bob. No, it's not.

The problem is that they make an update of an update because they found out new problem when releasing the first one. This is not how big software companies should work like. You don't use the users as a test group, You use the testers as a test group. Adobe is rich enough to hire hunderds of testers, trust me, been following their shares for a couple of years.

Moreover, saying "it's Your problem" is not how You treat Your customers. Because the tech guy from yesterday checked (or should have) my computer and said it's the application bug and will report that to the software team.

I don't want to prove to You how secure and reliable my iMac (this particular) is because it makes no sense. Just stop telling people it's their problem. It doesn't help, it frustrated them even more.

I’m not telling you anything, but I don’t work for Adobe. I’m a volunteer here with no skin in this game at all. I was trying to help but at this point it’s obvious that you’re not looking for solutions, you’re looking for blame.

If you’re that convinced it’s Adobe’s fault, then go right ahead an ignore every other possibility.

BobLevine no Bob, I'm not looking for blame because that doesn't help to solve my problem. What I said is that I tried every solution provided, including contacting the official Adobe's tech support, and as You could see in the attached chat transcript, they didn't help. It's not about why they didn't help, it's how they neglected the problem, wasting 1.5h of my time to tell me in the end that "there's no recovery file". They didn't want my logs, didn't want anything, they just told me "theres no file". You don't have to be an Einstein to notice that. What You should do, on the other hand, as a tech guy, is at least ask the user about their logs.

So I'm sorry Bob, if that seems strange to You, but it can make one not only frustrated but willing to blame the company. I AM thankful for Your time and Your willingness to help, trust me Bob, same as I'm thankful for other guys.

@rob day

Rob, I totally understand that but part of Your message is not true - I found several topics on this forum related to CC update deleting previous versions and other files without any warning. Still thank You for providing the info about older versions. Even Bob said something about turning off the GPU option so Adobe's already aware of the problem their apps create after latest update. Not to mention that when I restarted the computer this morning, the InDesign had reseted workspace so it's definitely having some issues with saving to memory. As I said in the beginning, I'm working on this file for the last couple of days (10 to be exact) and the problem started appearing after the last update. That's why I rule out the hardware problem.

@John Mensinger

The thing is John that there's a slight chance noone reported this bug yet, since the update was overnight two-three days ago, and maybe noone was using InDesign in such stressfull conditions - my document is 90 pages with many pictures, graphics and links. We had a 5 days long free of work weekend here in Europe etc. etc. Although my iMac has the maxed out spec (and is operating around 11 Gb of free memory at the time of working with InDesign) so I don't think the memory could have been a problem. Even if, the tech guy should check this out since I sent them the logs. Moreover, the system didn't crash how it would if it's memory problem - because memory problem freeze Your whole computer, You can't move the mouse or click anything, at least for the seconds when the app is crashing. None of this happened. The InDesign just crashed, the same way it did today.

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm really thankful for all the answers. I'm just waiting for a contact from Adobe which they said will take place on monday since it's weekend right now. Funny.

Is it a local or networked save?

I found several topics on this forum related to CC update deleting previous versions and other files without any warning.

It would be helpful to post links to those threads

Hi,

I am able to reproduce the issue that has been troubling you and some other folks here.

As a confirmation can you let me know that did you save the copy of the InDesign document with the same name (without the 'copy' in the name) and at the same location as the original InDesign file?

First of all, I'm sorry for not contributing in the issue lately, 'been quite busy and didn't have time to send You the info guys, sorry for that.

So - my workflow consists of working on the main file on the main system SSD (so I could eliminate possible problems like permission issues) and saving it to two network drives: two different NASes, one of which is connected through the cat6e cable and the other one by wifi. Also, I put another copy of the file on the CreativeCloud and the forth copy on the USB stick/external USB disk.

The problem occured for the first time while working on the main file on the main SSD and trying to save the copy (Save as copy...) to the CreativeCloud. This time I didn't change the string "*space* copy" to "_copy", just clicked "Save as copy..." and choosed CreativeCloud directory. It then deleted the main file.

The second time it occured I was working FROM the copy on the NAS and saving the copy of the file to the same folder as the original file (main SSD), as a matter of fact clicking on the original file name, so You are correct - I tried to save a copy of the file with the same name, without the "*space*copy" string in the filename. I did save few copies with "*space*copy" string that day to different locations (NAS, USB and CC) and they worked. This time it suddenly crashed.

Will get back to You as soon as possible.

Hi,

Great to know that I am doing something that allows me to replicate the crash that you had been facing this while. (Thanks to Yash Mathur's and your conversation!). At the same time can you elaborate a little on the below lines... What did you not change when you say

Also do you remember any error message that was displayed before InDesign crashed? (Its okay if you do not remember)

I am sorry that you had to face multiple crashes while working with InDesign which in turn hampered your productivity. At the same time I request you that from next time please save the copy file (using save as copy operation) with some other name(or location) than the original file .

This is something Adobe needs to check into. I can confirm that this time of "disappearing act" does actually occur. We use InDesign at work and we have had the same issue. We just start over. I work at a publishing company so we make dozens of documents a day, to my knowledge, we have not reported it. I don't know if the error message we receive is exactly the same, but I do know that the files are not able to be opened after InDesign crashes. Even if the file has been saved previously.

Are you saving to a local volume or to a networked server?

None of us are Adobe employees, but many of us are regulars on the forum, and we haven't seen your issue come up. So, despite the assurances of your tech guy, not considering the system when others are not reporting such a severe problem seems like a recipe for more frustration.

Your CC subscription lets you install any application version back to CS6, so it seems like it would be fairly easy to drop back to CC2015 or CC2014 and see if the problem is specific to the latest CC2017 update.

Now I'm coldhearted and just calculate possible solutions. One obvious is suing Adobe since it's the app problem that started to occur after the last overnight update.

I don't want to prove to You how secure and reliable my iMac (this particular) is because it makes no sense.

What's happened to you would drive me thoroughly insane, and I agree that your experience with Adobe support leaves plenty to be desired. But if you truly are "coldhearted" and analytical at this point, don't neglect to consider the possibility of a hardware problem. As Bob alluded, a so-called "software bug" — something wrong in all our updated copies that Adobe could identify and fix — would be putting many of us in the same situation as you, and there simply hasn't been any indication that's the case. And, from my own experience, the type of failures you're seeing are more often caused by memory modules gone bad and data I/O faults than by software defects. And, in every case of hardware failure, a system that's been "secure and reliable" up to that point, suddenly isn't. It wouldn't be the first time the first symptoms of a hardware issue coincidentally showed up at the same time as a software update.

Also, I was reporting the similar problem with Photoshop...

That only reinforces the suspicion.

Just sayin'.

If that's CC2017 and you're on Sierra, turn off GPU acceleration. It won't get lost files back but it will get rid of the crashing problem.

A couple of thoughts...

  • Are you having problems with any other software and/or files?
  • Are you able to perform a full backup?

Also, the network question is important.  If you are on a network, there could be permissions issues...and possibly even if you aren't. There is also the possibility of a failing hard drive or bad sectors that are causing these problems. You mentioned saving the document(s) in multiple locations, but is that on different media, or just different folders on your hard drive?

CHECK ANOTHER ADOBE "USER FILE DELETION" CRISIS ON ADOBE PREMIERE PRO!!

http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/05/17/adobe-premiere-deleting-media-temporary-fix/

Seriously, my one year work of short film 3.7 TB files were gone. Including the labor, it's worth $50,000 project.

They only says "Please visit recovery center, that's the only option"

Trust me, I have a huge damage here, There are several guys who lost 12tb -20tb entire server in Film editing world using adobe premiere pro. They "Fixed" the issue, after several month later. This is a joke.

Thank You guys for contributing. Finally other users decided to break the silence so Adobe won't marginalize this issue since it's a ready to roll class action. Of course I'm far from such bold moves but, as the author of the article stated: How did a bug like that make it through beta testing? I hope whoever signed off on that rollout is now looking for another job?

What I would wish for is a really diplomatic approach from Adobe's side. I hope their employees know that noone of us will accept the "do Your backups" explanation.

Will get back to You as soon as I finish my work - and I'd like to really thank amaarora since his one of not many Adobe employees who actually gave a shit about our problem, companies and our feelings

Aman, I can replicate the problem if I use Save A Copy and overwrite the file I'm trying to copy—with CC2014 & 2017. It crashes 2014.

I haven't been able to reproduce the problem when I use Save A Copy to save out a copy as a new file, which would be the typical usage.

With CC2017 I get a fair amount of warning before the file is actually deleted.

First this:

Then a write error:

Screen Shot 2017-05-22 at 12.12.34 PM.png

Then if I try to close the file I get asked to save, which I can't do:

And the finally if I close or quit without saving the file is gone.

Hi Rob,

Yes, exactly that is what I did to reproduce the crash, by "Saving a copy" with the same name as original file and in the same destination. I see InDesign crash in all versions right from CS6 to CC 2017.1

Was not sure that OP was also doing the same or something different and if he got the warning messages.  I was confused by the lines...

Don't want to minimize the bug, but I can't see the purpose of overwriting the active document via Save A Copy—surely it would be better to simply Save.

In CC2017 I'm not getting a crash—I could actually watch the active document disappear in the Finder when I ignored all of the warnings and closed. I also tried overwriting a file via Save A Copy that was open but not active and that save worked as expected.
