We use a Target .udc exceptions list in our User Dictionary. InDesign does not recognize a word with an apostrophe. One example is the word people's. We never want the words people, peoples, or people's to hyphenate, so they are in the list with a leading ~. InDesign will hyphenate the word people's. I tried entering the apostrophe using the apostrophe key and also as alt/0146, either way it is ignored and the word is hyphenated. Is there a way to enter an apostrophe in the User Dictionary that will be recognized?

Hi Sandee,

I import a .txt file with the words to add every 3 months. I just deleted the word in the User Dictionary in InDesign and added it back in there, not import. This time when I edited the paragraph the word will not hyphenate, so it's behaving properly. Odd.

Thanks

I'm stumped. I can easily add the word "~people's" with an apoostrophe and tilde to the Target User Dictionary and it doesn't break at all.

What exactly are you doing?

I’m glad it’s working for you. I suspect that the apostrophe is coming in incorrectly, like a straight quote, from the text file. But correctly when you type it directly into the User Dictionary in InDesign.

Hi Sandee Cohen

I have imported the text file in my UDC and added a word to fix the hyphenation the way my customer want to break (Perf-chart). But still the indd seems takes its original suggestion and app is not considered the added word. Please guide to fix it.

Not too sure I can fix it, but try adding the word as:

Perf~Chart with Case Sensitive turned on.
