Lightroom slows down and becomes unresponsive

My Lightroom (which has been updated to 6.10.1 in the hope of improvement) becomes gradually slower during use. It has always been slow to step between modules or even between pictures within a module but I have been attempting to keyword approx. 700 photos in a catalogue of around 3000 and find that after half a dozen or so performance drops. How far? well taking a few seconds to responding to clicking on another photo in the library gallery view. This performance continues to worsen until lightroom becomes unresponsive.

If I remember and exit lightroom before it becomes a problem I can restart with no issues but if I don't eventually the machine becomes unresponsive and only a hard reboot sorts it.

I have checked and during these issues I have plenty of free memory & disk. None of memory, cpu or disk appears to be particularly challenged and none of the other software I am running is affected - it is lightroom only up to the point it's unresponsiveness slips over into locking my whole session.

I have tried the suggested affinity setting to 4 cores - which is an inadequate solution as I have those additional cores for a reason but luckily I can see that all 8 are in use and the 2 exports I am running are working just fine so that doesn't help it seems- so some activities appear unaffected.

Oh and if anyone checks they won't find Lightroom registered to this account, I have finally found, having tried 2 Pcs, 1 android tablet and 4 browser products that a work around to the "too many redirects" issue that appears to work is a new account.

Please help! Product is not performing as expected to the extent that I had to try Olympus Viewer again and for those who know the product that will explain how desperate things have become.

thanks

Are you doing lots of brushing and/or spot healing on individual photos?

Do you have the GPU acceleration turned on or off? (Preferences->Performance Tab->Use Graphics Processor checkbox)

In these instances I have been working through just doing keywords, there are inevitably the odd tweak I make as I work through but essentially keywording is the last part of my workflow so trying to work through the gallery in batches of pictures (my keywording strategy is largely "who" and "where" for my own benefit so batches of pictures works nicely).

I have tried both with and without GPU acceleration - my card has 2Gb ram but it's probably not worth using, it has overclocking facilities built in using Amd Overdrive but the fan spins up / temperature rockets so that either my eardrums will burst or my legs which are next to my PC will incinerate which is a shame 🙂

I have also ensured that my AV is not scanning lightroom.

So last night I did 2 exports at the same time of the 766 odd pictures and that worked fine (I can't tell you if it took "too long" or not - it didn't seem unreasonable, the processor was busy but not max'd out and other activity worked) and I then jumped around modules and was investigating using rammap to see if there was an obvious leak and found nothing from just navigation activity.

It doesn't sound like you have answered my question: "Are you doing lots of brushing and/or spot healing on individual photos?"

In the instances where I have had a notable problem I have been working through just keywording with the odd tweak where I spot something missed : so no. I don't normally anyway.

I have the same issues,  32gb ram, m.2 ssd drive, 5820 6 core proc and I have to exit and reopen LR about once an hour or it slows down to the point it is unusable.  It starts kind of blinking and pauses and then a force close is needed or sometimes even a full system reboot.

THere are many reports of 6 core CPUs performing slowly in Lightroom. The solution is to force LR to use 4 cores, and if you search this forum, you can find the exact method of doing this.

I've seen that limited the cores suggested as a solution but I've tried it and it made no difference but even if it did it's may be a temporary workaround but it is not an acceptable solution. It really is time that adobe put some effort in and resolved the problem.

I have the same problem. I have a powerful machine (380 GB RAM, 2 intel proccessors 8 cores each) and LR (2017 release) slowes down as I work. I noticed that LR uses more and more memory while working. Each next photo takes 100 MB more. When reaches 10 GB of memory it is already slow. Simple commands, even changing a photo, takes several seconds. When I exit LR I observe that memory is slowly released. (I use system monitor fot this)

I think LR or Windows 10 cannot manage such amout of memory for the program (other programs work without troubles, in the same time). Seems to be a problem with software - LR or Windows 10. I still have plenty of RAM, processors are of almost no use, but LR is critically slowing.

I have tried some tricks - turned off and on the use of Graphic Card Processor, tried different values of Camera Raw Cache Settings. I also switched the monitor from 4K to HD. These makes no effect. The only soution is to exit Lightroom every 10 minutes.....

I use also LR 5 on a MacBook Pro (middle 2012) and it works great.

Same problem here - Lightroom worked fine on my PC for almost two years, I could work for hours on end with no slowing down, and now since about two weeks ago I've had this issue. I've tried several things to improve performance - increasing the cache seems to buy me some time and the slow-down sets in a bit later, but so far I haven't found a solution.

Very frustrating, fix this quick, Adobe!
