Latest Release of Lightroom does NOT recognise Nikon D7200 NEF (RAW) files. Does anybody else have this issue? If so, then, how do i get around it please?
I'm a Windows 10 user.
Thanks.
Ian.

Explain what you mean by "does not recognize". Exactly what happens or doesn't happen? What is the complete unedited word-for-word error message?
What is the version NUMBER of your Lightroom? I want the number, not words like "up-to-date" or "most recent".

Lr just displays 'Preview unavailable for this file for each NEF file.
Lr software release no 2015.10.1
Thanks for the response.

Normally when you get this message, it is because you do NOT have a new enough version of Lightroom.
Can you show us a screen capture of Help->System Info?

Do you have the firmware update Ian?

Yes, that helps.
Where are the photos? Are they on the camera card still in the camera? Or on a camera card in a card reader? Or on your hard disk? Or somewhere else?

The images are on the hard disk.

Can you import the images anyway, even though it says "Preview unavailable"?

Hi DJ,
No. There is only a greyed out square image in Lr, with the Error Msg. printed on it.
Thanks
Ian.

Will apply the one that you advised me of.

As has been said you need to tell us which version of Lightroom you are using. The D7200 is listed as working with Lightroom 6 so it's puzzling that it doesn't work if that is your version of Lightroom. Nikon camera raw compatibility comes up regularly in the Photoshop forum. For some reason Nikon cameras don't play well with Adobe software. The first thing to try is converting your NEF output into digital negative format DNG. Life would be so much simpler if camera manufacturers just gave users the option to output to DNG on these professional cameras, but most don't-except I think Fuji.
For Mac
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 9.10.1
For Windows
Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 9.10.1
Hopefully that will work, but Nikon Nef sometimes is unaccommodating.
A while back I came across a YouTube video with a hack for the D7200. Now I don't have a Nikon so have not been able to test this myself , but it definitely works in the video. Trouble is it's slightly more complicated than just feeding files from a camera into Lightroom.
Take a look below if the Adobe DNG Converter doesn't work.
What he is doing is actually no more than using a program to edit the EXIF data in each NEF file-specifically changing the name variable of the camera to a five series model. This then allows the modified NEF files to be read by DNG converter and converted. The files then happily open in Photoshop or Lightroom. Sounds a lot of work but it's all done by batch conversion.

I 'm on Lr 2015.8 Software Release.
Thanks for the information. I will try the DNG converter option.

There's no need to try the DNG Converter.
You do need however, to answer my earlier questions:

Another thought: this is not a new Nikon D7500 camera vs D7200 that you are talking about?
The D7500 is not yet supported by Lightroom.

Is there any chance you used Nikon Transfer to download the images from the camera?

Jim,

Do you know of an issue with teh use of NIKON Transfer?
Thanks,

Some versions of Nikon software will cause the symptoms of the file being unreadable by Adobe software. You should transfer the photos from the camera card using Lightroom or your operating system.

IF your version of Nikon Transfer is one of those that causes problems with corrupting the NEF files then here is a link to a utility that you can use to fix those files so that they can then be read by the Adobe software:

There really isn't any need to use the Nikon software. It doesn't do anything magical. You can download your images using your operating system or download them directly using Lightroom. I have been using Lightroom since version 2, and have never used Nikon Transfer. I am on my fourth Nikon camera at this point.
