When I try, installation fails due to outdated plugins. When I try to update plugins, I can't beacaue flash player is not up to date.

How does this get fixed? I'm running Windows XP.

There were two separate update files. One worked, one didn't.

This one always failed flashplayer26_a_install.exe from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=FP_26_for_Firefox_-_NPAPI&os=2003&browser_type=Gecko&browser_dist=Firefox&stype=6602

This one worked install_flash_player.exe

The files are distributed to a global contend delivery network (CDN), and it takes some time for the network to be updated with the new files.  It's possible the server your hitting hasn't been updated with the new files.  It should be updated by now.  If it's still not working, try clearing the browser cache.
