What software are you viewing them in when they are black? Is it Reader or Acrobat or InDesign or...?

Go to Edit - Preferences - Page Display and make sure that "Show large images" is ticked.

In the menu bar at the top of the window. If you're on a Mac then the Preferences are under the Acrobat menu, though.
