This is normal and has never been different. You have to use IDML to exchange info across different versions at the cost of possibly losing information.

Mylenium is correct. Each version (for example, CS5, CS5.5, CS6, InDesign CC, InDesign CC 2014, InDesign CC 2015...) has its own file format. The person with the later version needs to choose File > Save As > InDesign CS4 or Later (IDML) to save an interchange format that can be read back to CS4.

It's a bad workflow to work between two different versions of InDesign because it's possible there could be reflow or other inconsistencies.

However, unless they have old, unsupported computers and operating systems, both CC users should able to upgrade to the latest version—InDesign CC 2017.

I agree with Steve Werner in that this is not a good workflow at all. I guess my question would be why doesn't user B as a CC subscriber just upgrade to CC 10 to match user A. This would solve the problem. That being said, the dialog that you included in the original post is a benefit of being a CC subscriber. Even though user B is using an older version of Creative Cloud, they have the ability to click OK and have the file uploaded to the cloud, converted back to a compatible version for that user, and then opened on their computer without forcing anyone to save as an idml file.

Hi Chad,

possible, provided:

1. You can access the Simple Saveback service from an Adobe Server.

( Company IT policy can speak against that. Ports are blocked. )

2. Your files are not too complex. It could last "ages" with highly complex files—e.g. big tables or a lot of tables—to convert a document to IDML and let Simple Saveback open it as InDesign document in the lower version. Or it will fail out of complexness…

3. You are not on OS X 10.6.8 with InDesign CC v 9.3.0 where Adobe's Simple Saveback service is not available or reachable—but you will get notified that a conversion is possible.

Regards,
Uwe
