A way to have unlit models with opacity masks?

Hello,
So I am making some 3d game objects in maya and I have leaves that are planes with the leaf shape cut out in the opacity mask layer, I want to have them be flat, unlit textures so I can just paint in my lighting, but I have to have "solid" selected to have the masks work. Is there a way to have unlit texture with the mask enabled? Or do I have to either mess with lighting or just model the leaf shapes in maya?

Hope that makes sense! If clarification is needed I can create an example to show.
