I reformatted my external hard drive to work with my MAC. My Lightroom is still not showing the external hard drive. Do I need to change the location in catalog settings? If so how? or do I need to do something else?

LR only shows drives and folder that you have imported images from. LR is not a File Manager like Finder. That is if you are asking about the Folders section in the Library module.

If you are referring to the import dialog then try collapsing then expanding the "Source" heading. Make sure that external drive is showing in Finder.

If you are importing images that are already on the EHD then select "Add" at the top of the Import dialog window, Not Copy.

Selecting Add will add the images to the LR catalog and leave the images where they are on that drive.

That worked except they are not organized how I have them on my external hard drive. They are just all lumped together verses having them organized by year, month, date?

How are they stored on the external? In separate folders with the year, month, day names. If LR isn't displaying those folders in the Folders section (when importing images, most recent import, will all be in the "Previous Import" heading in the Catalog section and that is why they are all lumped together) then maybe you should turn on the option to Show Parent Folder.
