You may try toggling between GPU and CPU with Ctrl/Cmd+E.

thank you for the suggestion, jacob. i didn't notice any changes anywhere when i tried that....

do you have any other ideas? i'm at a loss!

Please post a screenshot.

Include in that screenshot the swatches panel, the layers panel, the appearance panel.

What happens when you save that file as a PDF and open in Acrobat. Is the box filled or not?
