ID CC 2017 crashes when 'edit original' is clicked - need a fix

Just installed CC 2017 on new Win 10 with 4.0 CPU, Graphics Accel and 32 GB ram. After CC apps are running for a few hours, clicking 'edit original' causes ID to freeze then crash. I have deleted the prefs. No affect. Restarting ID does not help. Only fix is to reboot. Had been running CC on Win 7 for several years. Never had this problem. Very annoying.

Hi,

Can you let us know if you are on InDesign CC 2017 or CC 2017.1(latest).

Can you also delete cache along woth preferences and then restart?

Let me know if it solved your issue.

It is 2017.1. I deleted the recovery cache and SavedData and restarted ID. It has no effect whatsoever. I will have to reboot.

Hi,

Were you able to get this resolved after rebooting the computer? Are you working on files which are saved on a network? Do you have any third party device or plugin installed?

I rebooted and have been running ID for four days. The crashing problem seems to have been resolved, however, now when a linked file opens in AI the Layers palette is revealed and flickers rapidly. Clicking inside the window seems to stop the flickering without side effects. Just a little distracting.

I am working with local files. Many are client files that I have created using various upgrades of ID, AI and PS since 2003. The only CC plugin I am using is the current version of Suitcase Fusion (also used since 2003). The font library and collections were copied over from the old Win 7 machine. Fonts appear to be working fine.

After rebooting I left the machine running over the weekend. Used ID

extensively this morning. No problems until just now. Same

symptoms...freeze and crash. See post.

Here's a clue. The most recent crash occurred after the linked file had been edited directly in AI and not updated in ID. Layers were changed. It may also have something to do with changes made to the names of linked files outside of ID. When ID cannot find the original file or the linked file does not have the same layer structure as the original link it crashes instead of posting an error or update dialog.

More clues. ID seems to be having problems updating embedded files from AI. When embedded files are edited directly in AI instead of using edit original, ID seems to be unable to update the proxy image or the link. In high-res preview, still shows the old version of the file or shows new version with hidden layers exposed. Clicking edit original causes ID to crash. Embedded images can only be updated by deleting them and re-placing them.

Hi,

Sorry for the inconvenience. Clearly, this is one of the issues that we have tried to fix ever since.

Can you please mail me your AI file(and the file you are placing) at amaarora@adobe.com?

Please do mention the steps (or send a video) so that i can reproduce the crash.

Thanks Aman. As to problem files, it seems that any ID files and any AI

files including newly created ones. The only thing that seems to fix it

is rebooting (memory leaks?) but after a few hours it always returns. I

have used CC for several years on Win 7 but never had this problem. I

put in a new high-end Win 10 workstation, partly to keep current with

Adobe Suite and other software that I use but its not working out well.

I will put some samples together for you within the next day or so.

Aman:

I am attaching a zip folder with ID and AI files. When the computer is

rebooted, there is no crash for a couple of hours when clicking 'Edit

Original." Then after CC has been running for a few hours it starts

crashing. Then I have to edit everything in its native app and update

the links. This is happening with all my files, including new docs.

Hi,

Thanks Bruce for helping me in this issue.

unfortunately i have not received your mail.

Can you resend at [Personal information removed by MOD] or perhaps the link to the Google Drive?

Also, do add the video showing the steps you do before the crash...

Thanks again

Just sent you a link to Zip on Google Drive.

All I do is right-click a linked AI file (Win 10). When the machine has

been booted recently, I am able to choose 'edit original' and it opens

the file in AI. After ID is running for a couple of hours, when I

right-click, ID it freezes. 30-seconds later I get a Windows dialog

saying that ID is not responding. Then 30-seconds later I get a Windows

dialog saying that ID is closing. Then poof it's gone. I cannot record

it since I don't know when it is going to happen.

More clues: I have been experimenting with different ways to work around

this problem. I am now opening the Links tool palette, clicking on the

named link, then clicking the 'edit original' button. The file opens in

AI and this does not cause any crashes. Alternatively, I can open the

linked file in AI, edit it and then update the link in ID without crashes.

Hi Bruce,

I have received your files.

i tried both ways to edit the files. (using right click and edit original)

I experienced the crash with neither of the scenarios. I think i should leave my system undisturbed after the files get opened in AI. I will surely try that and let you know the status.

Honestly, I tried to edit it many times using the links panel. I just tried once by right clicking.

Thanks once again.

Thanks Aman.

I did not send you fonts. I have been using Font Fusion for many years

to manage fonts and am currently running the latest version (18.2.4.117)

for Win. It is the only plugin I am using. Have there been any problems

reported on this plugin? I may try installing the needed fonts in the

system font folder and turning it off. Other than that I will have to

uninstall CC and do a clean install.

Hi Bruce,

Yes, in the past we have fixed a number of crashes related to interaction with suitcase fusion.

If possible, cab you at your end uninstall fusion and then try?

Aman:

I have uninstalled Font Fusion, ran ID for a few hours but did not

experience any crashes. But I have had to reinstall it to keep working.

As before, after a couple of hours it crashes again. This behavior is

very specific to the right-click context menu in Windows. It does not

occur if I single-click and choose edit original from the Link palette.

I am also finding that ID is not routinely updating the proxy image when

edits are made by this method or if linked sources are replaced. When

that happens the source must be re-linked after edits are made and

sometimes the layers seem to be confused in the proxy. Like hidden

layers start showing up.

I will have to keep working around this until something changes.

Now getting this error message every time I click 'edit original.' Clearly some sort of memory addressing problem. This is really getting old. I have 32 GB Ram! This only happens when using the right-click context menu. Now CC Bridge has started freezing and crashing.IndesignError-082117.jpg
