Creating my own guide lines in a document

I figure there must be an easy answer to this one, but I can't figure it out.

I'm working with a template from Blurb, to make a photo book. They provide the trim lines. However, I'd prefer to have a second set of trim/guide lines on my template, just so I'm playing it safer in terms of not having any photos cut off from the final product.

I've tried dragging lines from the ruler into place but it's proving to be troublesome. I'd like to have turquoise lines on all four sides of each page in the double spread (see attached photo), 3/8" in from the magenta margin.

Can anyone please help? Thanks very much.

EDIT: Ooops--forgot to attach the photo. Blurb spread.JPG

Go to Layout > Margins and Columns

  • Note your current Margins
  • Change them to 3/8" for all

Go to Layout > Create Guides

  • Enable Preview
  • Fit Guides to Margins, not Page
  • Set both Rows and Columns to 1
  • (The Gutter does not matter when you have 1 column)

Go to Layout > Margins and Columns

  • Re-type your original margins

Put them on their own layer and set the layer options color to turquoise.

Maybe I didn't explain very well what I am trying to do.

I would like guide lines equidistant from the magenta lines, 3/8" inward on top, bottom, and left side and right side of each page in the spread. Is there an easy way to do this (other than dragging the lines manually from the ruler)?

Thanks.

Hi,

how about dragging and then mentioning its position as per the ruler?

When you have dragged, all you need to do it is to select it and then set its position from the control strip..Something like...

I do agree you will have to do it 4 times though.

That did work, thank you. The only thing I must do manually is move the inner margins (where the two pages of the book meet (near the gutter).

That’s in the margin and columns set up. Do it on the master page and it will be effective for all pages.

In my first step I said note what the originals margins are and in the third step I said how to put them back. Hope that helps!

Some of the other methods given also work, but this is the method that does not involve dragging guides.

As Bob said, doing this on the Master is best, if you know how to do that.

I repeated the steps, and I'm still getting the guides close to the gutter and not inside the spread pages. See screenshot attached. Spread with guidelines.JPG
