My Elements 7 has stopped working. (Due to the latest Windows 10 update?). Should I go directly to the current Elements 15, or take a more stepwise approach in order to keep all functionality intact? I used to have a "tree structure" of location names, but cannot see that in Elements 15, which I have installed a free version of and restored a backup from my Elements 7 into.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see in PSE 15?

"stepwise approach" : upgrade first to e.g. 8 and then to further (all of) versions between 7 and 15

There is no upgrade. Any reference to "upgrade" is related to marketing. Each version of the program is independent.
If your concern relates to the organizer, see this tech note.

Suggest that you download/install the free 30-day trial of PSEv.15. If it works on your machine, and you like it, you can purchase the license subsequently.
