AE text layer not showing

I've used after effects for a while now, and just today got this problem. When I try to create a new text layer, it won't show up in the composition area. Its really frustrating. Very frustrating! Please try resetting your preferences. Quit the application. When you restart hold CTR+ALT+SHIFT. A dialog will come up to ask if you want to reset your preferences. Say yes and let it start. Try the text again. The help page:

Mystery solution: your Vertical scale is on 0%

change it to 63% as the horizontal scale or reset the character panel from the panel options
