Unusual Green background: When using marquee tools....?

When using marquee tools or any other selection tools, i get a green tint in the background of the selected area that gets stronger and stronger until it goes black.

Imagine an animation that progressively applies a 0-100% tint background on selections made with the tools.

As soon as i click off it or select another tool it disappears. The green doesn't output as part of the job, it just seems to act like a selection background that continuously gets stronger until the whole area is black or until i click off it.

I have tried resetting the tools and resetting preferences and restarting my iMac, to no avail.

Has anybody else come across this or something similar? it is getting to be very annoying indeed!
