Interesting. Looks as if Adobe are playing safe this time and asking for a serial number before giving access to the new executable. At least every Tom, Dick and Harry will not be downloading thinking it is free.

Exactly what should have happened the first time around with CS2. The forums told Adobe this way back then. The CS2 "honour" system has never worked.

When non-activation CS2 was released, everyone - including the tech media outlets - went crazy publishing articles that CS2 was a free for all. Adobe soon explained that it was not free and most outlets published corrections soon afterwards.

I remember going to a French restaurant in San Francisco the day I bought the CS3 upgrade, which by then was in a long shrink-wrapped DVD case.

The restaurant is long closed and CS3 is practically a fossil.

Looks like CS3 menu help Update will not work.  So you will need to downloade them manually and install them.  CS3 was one of the best version of Photoshop out of Adobe doors. The is only one Update to CS3 and several  ACR version it ships with 4.0 all you only need do is download ACR 4.6 Updates links. When you install CS3 dirint the install you enter your new serial number. After you doe you will see some message about not beinag able to contact the registration serverthat seems to be OK.  Hhad no problem installing tCS3 and installing the patch and ACR 4.6

Fair warning if  you have Creative Cloud installed and having a genuine copy of CS3, you want to install the non-activation replacement on a PC that never had it before.

It has in my case removed the CC Desktop app from Windows 10 and set file associations to CS3.

I fixed it by reinstalling the Desktop app and no harm was done.

Something to keep in mind.
