HI,
I use Lightroom version: CC 2015.12 on a Mac, and I have come across some peculiarities on white balance settings.
In my catalog, I have photos originating from a Nikon D90 and a D3100. The D90 pics are all in .nef and the D3100 pics are .jpg
Now, there is a difference in white balance options, for the D90 I can choose As Shot/Auto/Daylight/Cloudy/Shade/Tungsten/../Custom but for the D3100 I can only choose As Shot/Auto/Custom
I fail to come up with god reasons why, please help.
You have answered your own question. Jpeg files have the camera white balance baked into the file. With Nef/RAW files you can adjust the white balance in post production.

This is standard. The full range of WB camera options are only available for 14 bit raw files which have the greatest dynamic range and can be changed in post processing. Jpegs are 8 bit compressed files “baked in the camera” according to the user settings. You could create your own custom setting and save it as a preset to apply to jpegs.
