Loss of quality when exporting to jpeg

Hi

I have noticed that when I export an image that I have edited in Lightroom 6, using 100% Quality setting, there is a loss of quality in the output file, or rather when viewing the exported jpeg in Windows Photo viewer ( Windows 7) or Photos in Windows 10.

This is not always that noticeable, however with certain images, the result has a very negative impact on the appeal of the exported image.

An example is a photo of a bird with a red eye. On the Lightroom screen, it is shining brightly and make the photo look stunning.

However when viewing the exported jpeg with Windows viewer, the eye looks very dull and the sparkle that gave the image such appeal is gone,

making the photo look very mediocre.

Is there a solution to being able to view jpeg images outside of Lightroom and still get a top quality image?

I have 3 22" LED LG HD monitors monitors and have tried it on every monitor and the problem is evident on all 3 monotors (the settings of which are as close to the same as I could get them).

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Mark

Put a check mark in "Sharpen For:" in the Output Sharpening section and set it to Screen and do another export.

Hello Natalouwrens, you have now jumped into several threads with your situation, and it would be best if you could stick to the one thread that you started here, so we don't get your problem and markmas problem (he started this thread) confused. The answer your problem could be different than the answer to the problem at the top of this thread.

So please, Natalouwrens, post your pictures and settings in the thread you started at Unsharp and noisy when exported from lightroom to jpeg and not here.

Let's keep the discussion here to the problem posed by markmas

Wow! That worked.

Can you explain it? Seems I should leave that setting always?

So you can just ignore my earlier email with all the attachments and

explanations.

Thanks a mil for the advice.

I don't really understand the significance of ticking the sharpen for

screen box, but seeing that it worked perfectly, I reckon I will just leave

that setting in place for all the images that I export.

Any explanations would be appreciated, but thanks again.

Hi

I am attaching 4 screenshots.

1. Screenshot from Lightroom ( Saved using Windows Paint).

2. Screenshot from Lightroom ( Saved using L View Pro ( a very old

graphics viewer)).

Note when captured in LviewPro, the eye in the image looks bright, but

when saved and opened in EITHER LviewPro or Windows Viewer, it is Dull.

The problem could be that when Windows saves the screenshot, it might

somehow downgrade the image quality?

When the screenshot is captured directly into Windows Paint ( as

opposed to LviewPro), the eye is immediate Dull ( even without saving and

re-opening.

3. Screenshot of Export screen.

I am not sure if you will be able to tell the difference between these

files, given what I have described above, because my sense is that Windows

is somehow adversely affecting the image when it saves the screenshots.

So, to get around the problem that seems to be created by WIndows ( maybe

that's why people use Apples ), I have taken pics of the Lightroom

screen and the Windows Photo viewer, using my mobile phone ( Samsung Galaxy

S6) and am attaching them here ( attachments 5 & 6).

Thanks

Mark
