How does LR print module select a printer?

I have two printers in two different locations.  My (laptop) computer's default printer is changed whenever I change locations.  LR, however, maintains the same default under all circumstances.  It is not affected by the computer's default setting, nor can I find anything in preferences or in the print module itself.  Even when I change the printer manually in the print dialogue, the next time I open the dialogue, it has reverted to the old default.

How does LR choose a default?  Is there not some way of changing the default  in LR itself?

(Run Win 10, 64-bit.  LR is up to date.  Printer here is an Epson Stylus Photo R2000; other printer is an Epson SC-P400 series.)

Thanks.

I don't believe that Lightroom is Default Printer aware. I think you will have to define the printer in Page Setup each time you print to a different printer, or-

For a work-around you could try- Making two Template Presets for each print design- the two templates will have the different printers stored in the Presets.

eg.  User Templates:  8x10 for Printer(A)    8x10 for Printer(B).

Save a Template with Printer(A), connect to Printer(B), save another Template.

Hi Gail,

You can select a default printer in Lightroom from Print module itself.

Select "Printer" in the bottom right and choose a printer from the drop down menu under the"Name" section.

Thanks,

Akash

I'm sorry, but that doesn't speak to LR's choice of DEFAULT printer. I can

obviously select a printer whenever I open the dialog, but it is annoying

to have to change the printer LR has selected every time I want to print

something. I go back and forth every few months between two different

locations. each with its own printer, and when I move I'd like to be able

to tell LR just once which printer to use and not over and over again

whenever I print. After a few weeks of doing that, LR finally "teaches"

itself; but, by then, I'm ready to move again. It's not impossible but it

is rather a nuisance. (My computer, of course, does not have this problem;

once changed, it stays changed.)

Thanks for trying.

In the printer drop down list, select Printers & Scanners Preferences.

In the ensuing dialog, select the default printer in the lower right corner Default Printer drop down list.

I don't know what list this first screenshot shows--it doesn't occur in my

LR printer drop down list. If you are telling me how to set the default

printer for my computer, I do know how to do that, and it does not correct

the problem in LR print module. I believe I described this problem in

detail in my original post.

Yes, I do understand your question.

The first screenshot is what I see in Lightroom by going to the Print Module, and in the lower right corner, clicking the "Printer" button.  The dialog box that I see for my Epson printers is seen below:

Screenshot 2017-08-09 13.11.59.png

The first screenshot in my first post is what I see when I click on the "Printer" dropdown menu in the above screenshot.  It tells Lightroom the default printer for Lightroom.

You can also get here by clicking the "Page Setup" button on the lower left corner of the Print Module.

Can you show us a screenshot of what you see?

You indicate that you have printers in "two different locations". Does that mean on two different computers? What operating system? What is different about the one where you can't seem to set the appropriate default printer?

What you see when you click "Printer" on lower right in print module is not

what I see. What I see is the same dialogue box as comes up when clicking

"Page Setup" on lower left. (I'd send a screen shot, but I've forgotten

where to post it--can't attach it here, I know.) It is actually just the

Epson printer dialogue box. It shows me which printer is selected (which I

can change with its drop-box), tells me whether it's ready and allows me to

set the printer properties, select number of copies, page range, etc. I

don't see the options shown in your screen shot links. In other words, I

believe what I am seeing is an Epson dialogue box and not a LR one, nor do

I see any way to access a LR one.

I can change the selected printer but only for the current printing

session--it will revert next time I go to Print Module. After I've

manually done this numerous times, LR will eventually change it's default

selection. I would like to be able to change the default myself as

needed, so I don't have to keep fixing it every time I select "Printer" or

"Page Setup."

I have one computer (Microsoft Surface Book), which travels with me between

two homes, so same operating system (Win 10, 64 bit) and same everything

else EXCEPT computer manages the default printer for the computer itself

depending, I assume, on which one is plugged into the computer. I can't

ever select the default printer myself in LR in either case--it always

makes its own selection.

IF you'd still like a screen shot, please be kind enough to remind me how

to post one. Thanks.

Below is screen shot with a printer profile selected and Print window opened by clicking on "Printer" at lower right.  This makes sense since selecting a profile includes selecting a printer.  BUT, the same Print window opens if no profile is selected and the color is "managed by printer."  I still don't see any way to change that, no way to have color managed by LR without selecting a profile, and no way I've found to get the drop-down options shown in your screen shots.  (Perhaps my issue can be solved only by figuring out how to set default printer through Epson dialogue and not in LR?  though I'm not sure how to do that either.)

Your dialog is different than mine for the same printer, perhaps because you are using Windows and I am on a Mac.  Are you saying that the drop down menu for print "Name" does not give you the option to set a default printer?  Perhaps someone using Windows might be able to help.

Right you are. Nowhere in LR does anything give me that option. The only

place I can set a default is in the computer's "Printers and Scanners"

dialogue--and now Windows does that for me automatically. I appreciate

your answers. I'll try to find another way to solve this.

Thanks.  That's a possible work-around, though it's probably just as easy to select the desired printer each time.  People who use a Mac seem to have found a way to set up, in LR, which printer comes up first, or automatically, but the options they see don't come up in Windows.  Maybe there are other ways, using Epson or Windows, but I haven't found any.  (I have marked your answer Helpful.)

Once again, that simply selects the printer for that particular session.

It does not select a default for future sessions. (Maybe a Mac gives

different options, but Windows does not.)
