LR 4 Catalog shows rectangles but no images

Migrated data from backup to new hard drive.  LR4 works, and catalog shows up but there are only boxes where there should be images.  Any idea how to solve this?

Tried the suggestion from the article.  It does not work.  It does not seem to be any problem with the monitor, I have the same issue regardless of monitor or profile.  It seems to be an issue with FINDING the files somehow.

There are no indications (exclamation point icon or question mark icon) shown in your screen capture to indicate that Lightroom can't find the files.

Can also be a corrupt Preview folder-

Lightroom error on preview cache or displays gray thumbnails

Soooo cool to see the images popping back up - like family history rebuilding.  Thank you SOOOOOOO much!

Well... That was mostly it.  Many images have returned but now seeing many ! in black circle with boxes of missing pictures

UPDATE-

Ok. It's a permissions thing.  I went into the folder containing the ! marked photos and it says: "You don't have permission to open the document..."  But I should.  Solution here?

Yes, you have to go into your operating system (Windows or OSX) and change the permissions on the folders so you have WRITE permission.
