Can't play back 4k RED footage in real-time

I am facing some serious issue with my new machine to play back realtime 4k RED footage. I keep getting frames drop within couple of secs. I reported this to the customer care and they reverted with a stupid reply without even knowing my hardware details. The reply is as follows:

"

Hi Prashant,

I hope you are doing well,

As far as I can understand the concern you are having regarding the 4k files to have a real time playback in Premiere pro . there is no 100% surety that the Premiere pro can give you a real-time playback.

In your case, you can use the proxy workflow  which is design for such conditions

Please check the link below and follow the same

https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/proxy-workflow.html

"

The only reason I bought creative package was it was realtime.

I hand picked this config so that it can play realtime 4k. PP 2015.3 was able to play. Why can't the new one?

My hardware:

i7 6900k processor (tried both 3.2 and 4.0 GHz) with water cooler

64 GB Corsair RAM

Quadro p4000

X99 ASUS workstation E motherboard.

850 watt Corsiar RM power supply

1TB samsung 850 pro hard dial

Also 8 TB RAID 0 (zero) hard disk.

It's connected to LG widescreen 34 inch Wide screen monitor and 4k 10 bit monitor

I have been using premiere since Premiere 6 5 (before CS and Pro series). But this time it's turning into a big disappointment.

I have tried every possible thing from reinstalling windows to checking all preferences. Any help will be appreciated

First, "real time playback" is nice when it works, but hardly necessary for most workflows. Second, depending on which format/codec out of that RED, any one computer may do better or worse than you'd "expect". Third, the way you work ... which effects you use, plus any 3rd party plugins & all, WILL affect how the playback works.

This last is where a lot of people hit a wall ... they say plop Warp Stabilizer on multiple long clips off the bat ... then add other things. It can't do real-time, it keeps re-analyzing ... it's terrible! Well, yea, just do a test sequence to make sure that WS will work properly on a clip, maybe with your other expected effects applied also, but don't apply it in your working sequences until near the end of the editing process.

Lumetri, especially in multiple layers, kills playback ...  also do it last. As with video denoising.

So work smarter considering PrPro as it exists, not how you think or want it to be.

And also ... download & run Bill Gehrke 's PPBM8 process, to get real good & hard data on how well that entire machine actually works within PrPro.

I am not using any effect. Just Playback. 😕 Even in source Monitor it drops. Whats the use of spending so much? And why does Adobe claim 4k 60 fps realtime playback?

R Neil Haugen Did the test. Every export of the sequence took less than a min. The vbs file doesn't execute; gives an error in windows 10.

You will need to have all the system monitoring stuff installed & running, and send the output logs to Bill for him to evaluate, that's how that works. Then from the data, you'll be able to see exactly how each subsystem performed.

I've never seen any actually absolute claim of 4k playback in 60fps of any codec on any system ... nothing even close. In fact, the entire reason they came out with their new proxy setup on ingestion was because format/codec changes (larger "K", faster frame-rates, often at higher compression and/or long-GOP) are outpacing hardware upgrades rather substantially.

It's so quick to pop between the proxies & the original media ... single click or keyboard short ... that it's to me a puzzlement why some folks don't use it. Although there are some situations where the new proxy process doesn't work as well, they aren't so common.

Which settings for the format/codec are you using on that RED?

It most likely gives you an error message because we do not know where your files were exported to.  The exports have to be where to script is located .  DO NOT copy and move the files CUT and paste them so the timestamps are not changed.  IF the MPEG2-DVD export without GPU assistance took less than a minute you are doing something wrong

Did you catch the 3rd test where you turn off Mercury Playback. That test will take more than a minute and if you are missing a test you get that error from the .vbs.

HI All,

Thank You for your support.

I did a screen sharing session with an adobe representative now, He couldnt figure out what was the issue. I played davinci resolve and it played 8k realtime. I showed him that 😕

MyerPj  Bill Gehrke I didnt have 3rd test in the project. There is Test 1, 2 and 4. Re-downloading it. When I open the project it asks me to rename the project file because it has got upgraded. Is there a specific file name I need to enter? for the version 2017.1.2? Will it affect the vbs script?

R Neil Haugen I took the footage from: RED | Sample R3D Files | Test drive your RAW workflow I started working on davinci resolve 14 for now because it is playing in full resolution. right from the timeline without frames dropped.    I miss premiere now.

I have requested the support to team to send someone who can help in solving it. They tried resetting the preference and the software.

Bill Gehrke I have installed the Speccy software. Here are the details:

The instructions on my web site are to SUBMIT the Speccy results, not to post them on the forum, I hope no one else ever tries this.  Also while the file above is very extensive it is also not complete.

I counted 134 processes running.  This is about twice as many as my well tuned dedicated video editing computer has.  It is no wonder that you cannot play a timeline with all those other processes stealing CPU cycles

You need to tune this computer

  1. As a starting point turn off indexing on any drive involved with  Premiere Pro project files.
  2. Disable every startup process the you can.
  3. For more on tuning see Harm's tuning guide.  It is a little date but should give you other steps.

I know this is ancient but process count has almost no effect on anything.  Most services are just sitting around waiting for specific events and their code never runs unless some very specific thing happens...   tons of tuning guides immediately go into "disable unused services" but since service code is never executed unless something specifically opens a named pipe and calls some functionality they provide this does nothing for CPU.

The same goes for well-behaved licensing servers and such for other software.

Similarly most running programs on a given system aren't doing anything except on a schedule dispatch from the Windows task scheduler once or twice a day.

The only "offenders" in terms of not behaving well in my experience are:

  • Adobe's own set of associated programs that are required with any CC program install are some of the most ill-behaved, constantly trying to do things like connect to the CC for organization management servers on non-organization managed installs every 30 seconds, doing handshakes, determining that nothing is needed, then writing hundreds of verbose log entries to plain text files a minute in the OS temp directory.
  • The Adobe stuff is also bad because most of it is running off of 2 instances (for some reason) of Node.js, it's all written in javascript and any interpreted language is going to use more CPU, and it has to do lots of interprocess communication which causes more context switches between threads.  Even with all that it's still sitting at 0.1% of the clocked-down CPU, and only, sometimes.
  • Pre-installed software from manufacturers, especially anything that can show advertisements.
  • Windows telemetry, which should be disabled on general principle.
  • Broken drivers which can be replaced.
  • Any open web browsers which are constantly running the megabytes of mostly useless javascript on the average open tab regardless of whether the browser is maximized.

There are probably some video codecs which can exceed the bitrate able to be provided by 2 regular HDDs in RAID0...

Also, AutoPICO appears to be a component of KMSPico, which is a tool that emulates a Windows volume license key server which it restarts twice a day to allow Windows to be used indefinitely without actually buying it.  Stuff like that (when it needs to be running all the time) tends to be written badly   Microsoft knows about this particular "crack" and based on their past attitude towards software like this there's a good chance they're degrading performance of everything intentionally on the OS that wasn't paid for...

Hey PrashantMac, the 3rd test is in the same timeline as the 2nd, just move the playhead forward a few frames for the new instructions. You can use the default Adobe name for the project when it asks to convert, the exported file names will not change. Just make sure to delete any existing EXPORT files (only) before you run PPBM again, otherwise Adobe will rename the export files for you also.
