Photoshop Forum,

I'm trying to remove the yellow paint from tree surface in background of this photo. Each time I use content aware it brings in flesh tones from the face. Please help, advise. All advice is greatly appreciated.

Select the area with magic or quick selection tool,

expnad the selection with few pixels from:

select -> modify -> expand

then use content-aware fill

if that did not work perfectly,

you need to make it manually using patch tool, Clone or spot healing

I always start with small portions, not with the whole area because it is too close to the skin part.

A quick screenshot (started with small rectangle:

ContentAware.png

Part is already 'repaired.

The trick with Content Aware Fill in difficult situations, is to select and copy just those parts of the image you want CAF to source the fill pixels from, so in this case, the tree.

However, as Dag has told you, CAF is not a good tool in this situation because the offending yellow area immediately abuts a critical part of the image, that being the young lady's face. So what we do is use the same method as when making composites  — Select and copy the critical foreground elements, and copy them to the top of the layer stack.  In this case I did not worry about the top of the young couple's heads, as that will overlay the identical pixels in the original image layer.   This is always a good idea, so that any repairs or new backgrounds etc. overlap _behind_ the Critical Foreground Elements This avoids hairline artefacts showing between old and new image elements.

Now we select the tree bark layer, and make a selection of the errant pixels making sure we overlap behind the lady's face

Having just more tree bark to source the fill pixels from, we can't get any irrelevant pixels in the repair.

Now we can turn on all the layers, and we have a decent fix.  You still see a touch of yellow under her chin, which is reflected light from the tree.

To fix that, (if you were a pedant like on of our forum regulars )  Clip a Hue/Saturation layer to the upper layer, and use the Master drop-down and select the Yellows (red highlight). Adjust the sliders to make the yellow area match the surrounding pixels.  Then invert the layer mask, and paint the problem area back in with white (Cyan highlight).  I feathered the mask a touch as well.

Mask the area (softly) and transplant another portion of the trunk into it. Then paint out the yellow reflections on her chin and hair with a brush set to color mode.
