When opening Illustrator, there was a screen that showed recently opened files, etc. automatically.  now this screen has disappeared.  how do I get it back??

Go to you Window menu > Workspaces and choose Start.

thanks for your replies - but neither of these worked.  I don't have either of these options.  why not??  hummmm.  really like that opening screen.  I've lost it before and have never figured out how to get it back.  what do you think?

If that doesn't work, choose another Workspace and then go back to Start.

You may also want to check your Preferences (Command + K Mac OR Control + K Windows) and in the General section, make sure "Show Start Workspace When No Documents Are Open" is checked.
