Kindle MOBI Text on Images

i'm at the end of my rope.

i'm creating a children's book.  i have full-page images, i'm placing text on the images.

my epub flies are fine, great, good, everything is perfect and validate properly.

when i convert to mobi, they are all screwed up.  (using calibre and/or kindle viewer 3 and/or kindle viewer 2.)

if i use epub: fixed format text, the mobi deletes ALL the spaces.

if i used epub: flowing format, the mobi separates out the images and text.

i know it is a long shot at this point.  but does anybody have a voodoo technique or workaround to get this to work?
