masking/isolating layer effects ..?

Is there a way to mask/hide a layer but have it's layer effects (like drop shadow etc) remain visible/unaffected (and remain available for further tweaking in the Layer Styles panel)?

Also, is there a way to mask a layer's effects without affecting/masking the layer's original content (and without having to separate the layer effects into a new layer?)  thnx

You can turn the layer's fill opacity down. This will only show the layer style and not the layer. As far as your second want, you can click on "Layer Mask hides layer effect." in the styles panel, but that's very limited, as you can't just mask the effect.
