Extended-crop area turns red

Hi there,

Somehow the layers in this one file in Photoshop CC 2017 cannot be edited; only the channels can. The mode is CMYK. It was originally shot in TIFF (as were all the other files).

I thought I solved it by creating a duplicate layer. This permitted me to extend-crop and fill, etc. in the duplicate layer.

But now when I open the file, the extended-crop area is highlighted red again. How will this print out? Why is my layer 0 inaccessible in this one file alone, and is there any way to reverse that?

Thanks!

Djuna,

Are you in quick mask mode? Try hitting Q on your keyboard to check.

Can you post a screenshot and include the layers?

What kind of edits are you making? Many edits cannot be done in CMYK mode. Just for the heck of it, try switching the image to RGB and see if the tools you need to edit the image are available.

Brad, I tried changing to an RGB profile, and I just got a different shade of red.

Melissa, unfortunately I didn't save my layers. But above is what I'm seeing. The first is uncrossed; the second is when I try to extend a crop in layer 0, and the third is the cropped-and-filled file from yesterday whose extended areas have been turned red

I can't recreate you issue. It looks like you are using content aware with the crop? I can't really tell. Can you take a screenshot from your computer and include the whole screen? On a mac you can hold down cmd/shift +4 and draw a box around PS - I'm not sure on a PC - maybe print screen? Something like this:

Yes, I was in quick mask!

That was the problem. Now I can crop and edit normally.

Thanks, everyone, for your help!  Whoo hoo!
