Refine Edge Problem

I have a problem with Photoshop CC refine edge on both my laptop and desktop running Windows 10. After doing a quick selection of the subject I wish to extract, I select Refine Edge. When using Refine Edge it washes out the edges of the image that I have extracted.

I would appreciate assistance in resolving this matter.

Hi Richard

Are you able to post a screenshot of the selection you are trying to make and also let us know the version of Photoshop you are using (Refine edge inside Select and Mask in the recent CC versions works differently to the Refine edge in older versions). If we can see the image we can try and advise you better

Refine edge can be very useful for fine edges things like grass, hair, fur etc. However it does depend on targeting the refinement just at those areas and not using it on already clear and smooth edges.

Hi

I can see from the above you are using the current version of Photoshop.

There were no images attached though. You have to access the forum online , not via Email, to attach an image. Use the button at the top of the posting box

Hi Richard

It looks like you are using too big a brush and refine edge is eating into your image. I find it works best with a small brush and only brush those edges that have the type of edge that needs refining using the tool.

Can you put the original picture up (rather than the screenshot with marching ants) and I'll have a go at masking it and show you the settings I use

Hi

I masked that using the following steps

1. I opened Select and mask and made a selection of the bird using the quick select tool

2. I switched to the refine edge brush and zoomed to 100% . I set the brush to 10 pixels, 1 % spacing and 100% hardness. In edge options I used radius 0px and left smart radius unchecked

I then brushed around the soft edges only - I top of the head the tips of the wings and the tail. Keeping the brush half on the wanted and half on the unwanted areas.

I did not use the refine edge brush on the "sharp" edges such as the top of the wings and beak at all

3. I set the output settings as below and clicked OK. Note I did not check decontaminate colors.

4. I added an empty layer above the masked bird and set its blending mode to color. I then Alt clicked on the boundary so that the layer is clipped to the layer below (as indicated by the small down arrow)
