I'm having a weird problem with the Halftone Pattern filter, images becoming very bright when applying a filter

So I must admit I'm quite new, but I'm having a weird problem with my filter gallery. When I try to apply a Halftone Pattern filter (following step by step a tutorial I'm watching online) it causes the image to become incredibly 'bright' - it removes almost any contrast or detail from the image. The video I'm watching does not have this problem and I can't find any trace of a similar issue online so... help?

This is the image I'm trying to apply the filter to.

This is what happens when I try to apply the filter, using the same settings as the video entails.
