Import without copy

Sorry for the noob question.  I have just installed Lightroom classic.  All my photos are on external drives.  When I try to import I only get the option of copy as DNG or copy.  I want to 'add' to catalogue and not move or duplicate my photographs.  No mater what I try the 'add' and 'move' button are not selectable.  What am I doing wrong?
