Hi,

I am have a real problem, copy and paste between files is not working and Indesign crashes when I do a paste.

Let me explain:

Did an upgrade of Indesign CC in Wednesday

Worked on a number of file and everything was find.

Did and upgrade of Windows 10 on Thursday and still everything was working well.

Saturday - working on two files that I was working on, on Thursday.  But when I copy the artwork from one file and go and paste it into another file indesign just crashes.

I have, just to let you the reader know, that I have uninstalled and reinstalled Indesign and that has made no difference

I really would appreciate any help and advice with this.

All the very best and thanks for reading.

Kind regards

John

Hi John,

Thanks for writing to us.

Can you please share some more details for helping us narrow down this issue at our end:

1. What artwork are you copy pasting(e.g. some Illustrator file, some native InDesign elements like rectangle, text frame etc)

2. Are you copying from one doc and pasting in other?

3. Is this crash happening everytime. If yes, please share the document having this element it would be great help.

Also, Please report the crash on the crash reporter dialog that prompts after crash.

You can send the doc @monsingh@adobe.com

Thanks

Hi Monica

Thank you for the questions which I will try to answer.

1. What artwork are you copy pasting (e.g. some Illustrator file, some native InDesign elements like rectangle, text frame etc)

I have tried copying Illustrator files (vector) text and images from one advertisement to be placed in another file as a banner.  Each time I copy the file, whether as a collection or singularly indesign crashes

2. Are you copying from one doc and pasting in other?
YES but the files have only been created this week so they are not old files

3. Is this crash happening everytime. If yes, please share the document having this element it would be great help.

Currently, it seems to be all documents.  I have tried a number of indesign files, with copy and paste and each time in design just crashes and paste.

Also, Please report the crash on the crash reporter dialog that prompts after crash.

unfortunately, I have never seen this, where would I find the reporter?

All the very best for now.

Kind regards

John

If you did not delete previous preference files when you updated to CC 2018 then I suggest that you do so. I have seen several instances of issues that appeared to be bugs fixed by getting rid of old preference files.

To do so:

Hold down Ctrl + Alt + Shift when launching InDesign and respond affirmatively when asked if you want to reset.

To manually delate preferences on Windows 10 Delete (or rename) the folder at the end of this path: C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\<Version #>\<Language>. Make sure that InDesign is closed when you do this. When you relaunch the program it will create  new preference files and the program will be at its default settings.

I recommend that after you’ve reset preferences and have redone all of your settings as you like them that (after quitting the program) you make a copy of this new “pristine” version of your preference file and save it for future use. It is a big time saver to be able to trash preferences and replace them with a version that is already as you like them.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for taking the time to give me some advice.  Unfortunately this has not work at all.  And I have found a new problem as well, when you go to move the grab handles on the text or picture frames, that also make Indesign crash as well.

I am not having a very good weekend.

All the very best for now.

Thanks, TCLOnline for all the details..

I am able to reproduce crash at my end when document has anchored objects in it. Please share a sample doc, if you are facing it in some other situation, with which I can try to reproduce the crash.

That would be really helpful.

Also, if your issue is similar to InDesign CC 2018 crashes when copying textbox with anchored object into Photoshop CC 2018 document –...

please vote on this issue.

Thanks

Hi Monica,

keep having the same problems as listed above, Indd 2018 just doesn't work, crashes all the time, the copy/paste function is not the only glitch. Have to work on the previous version until you fix it.

Here's the full report of the crash.

Best regards

I had the latest version on my Win 10 computer and today it just started this mess. I tried to copy text from a website and paste it and InDesign crashed. I tried all these fixes, and nothing worked. I cleared my clipboard thinking there was something corrupting it, no dice. I re-started my computer, I tried everything. Nothing worked. Then I re-installed an older version (13.0.1) of InDesign, and so far so good. Every update lately seems to give us designers more reason to Love & Hate Adobe. I will not update again until I see these issues fixed. Thank you.

Same shit here. I can paste nothing into InDesign without crashing it, even not from Illustrator. I hope this will be fixed soon. Working without simple copy and paste is a pain in the ass.

hi guys,

I am the originator of this post and have been trying to work a way round it so that I can continue to use indesign.  I don't know if this will work for anybody else but it has worked for us.  Go into Adobe cc: and look on the right hand side next to the button that says open and you will see a pulldown menu.  In this pulldown menu you can roll back to older versions of indesign.

We loaded indesign 2017 again and now we can use indesign 2018 without any problems (so far) pasting, copying, resizing seems not to be a problem and everything seems to be working just fine.

It is not a perfect situation but it lease the software is working and you can get on with your work flow.

I would love to know if this works for any other people in here?

All the very best for now.

Kind regards

John

Hi Alexw

Yes that is correct, When you update from 2017 to 2018, 2017 is removed by default, but when we put Indesign CC 2017 back on 2018 worked and as I said, it is working really well.

Hi, same problem here, since the update, no placing, no copy&paste, drag and drop is possible. Indesign crashes. My old cs5 version is working without any problems. Hope this will get fixed very soon, it's not good at all

Maybe the missing preference section is not available in the macOS version? But it’s definitely the actual Adobe InDesign CC 2018 version.

But could you reproduce the «workaround» to fix the crashes?

I am using the latest version of Indesign CC 2019 on Mojave, and have been having the same problem — hard crash + quit every time I cut or copy.

Blumenberg (ATS) ’s tip worked for me — after disabling “Copy PDF to Clipboard”, I no longer have problems with crashing.

It’s interesting that this bug has continued across from 2018 into 2019 — but this seems to be the thing to focus on. Thanks!

Having exact same instant crash when trying to copy paste within an InD doc, between InD docs, or from elsewhere (like email, word or simpletext) into InD - bringing my work flow to a standstill. As others have posted its a recent issue. Running InDesign 2017,  so NOT an issue related to the updates or releases.

Here's what worked for me:

1. go to activity monitor and QUIT/FORCE QUIT everything w/ Adobe in the name. AdobeIPCBroker and Adobe Desktop service, helpers, all of it. You can research these. There's NO REASON for a constant battery and/or resource draining info pipeline to exist between me and Adobe, esp. since Adobe has record of NOT protecting customer data. Adobe only needs to validate your license monthly or maybe even qrtly

2. export your file as an IDML, reopen and re-name it

3. Optional - install an app like Little Snitch that allows you to review and control outbound connections your computer makes - a shocking number of apps "phone home" constantly which drain ones battery and/or result in random mysterious laggy pinwheel spinning frustration

Things that didn't fix crashing upon copy paste:

-applying Adobe updates

-deleting InD prefs

-renaming file
-trying to copy paste content or drag pages from the "bad doc" to another doc (crash)

-changing copy paste prefs

-consulting this forum

Suggestion: vendors make extensions to convert files - so if you have another design app you can keep working when InDesign simply won't work. IMO Adobe products no longer work reliably - if you do deadline work - thats an issue and you need to CYA. Monopolies don't care about you.
