when I change a setting in preferences and then go to use select and mask I get an error saying Photoshop could not complete your request because of a program error. I then have to reset preferences and quit. This is very annoying any help to solve this would be appreciated.

Just to rule out the GPU - can you uncheck Use Graphics Processor and try (you will need to start a new document or restart Photoshop after changing)

Try going to Preferences > Performance > Graphics Processor Settings >Advanced and uncheck OpenCL

Hi Dave, that seems to be it. No problems with it today so fingers crossed. It gave me a warning about the graphics accelerator when I was using liquify but it worked ok. Thanks (I hope).

Now that you know it was a GPU problem, if you are Windows you should check the GPU manufacturers website for an updated driver (or if you are using the latest update it is often worth going back a step) to see if that resolves it and still allows you to re-enable the GPU.

I don't use a MAC but I don't think updating drivers is straightforward.
